NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD 1990 (ZOMBIES)

Night of the Living Dead (1990 film)

Night of the Living Dead is a 1990 US horror film directed by Tom Savini. It is a remake of George A. Romero's 1968 horror film of the same name. Romero rewrote the original 1968 screenplay co-authored by John A. Russo.

Plot
The film begins with siblings Johnnie (Bill Moseley) and Barbara (Patricia Tallman) visiting their mother's grave in a remote, rural cemetery. During their visit, Barbara is attacked by a zombie. Her brother comes to her defense but is killed in the struggle. Barbara flees the cemetery and discovers what at first seems to be an abandoned farmhouse. She seeks shelter there, only to find a mutilated corpse and another pack of zombies. She is joined there shortly after by Ben (Tony Todd) and the two clear the house of zombies and begin the process of barricading the doors and windows.

They discover that other survivors are already hiding in the cellar of the house: Harry Cooper (Tom Towles), his wife Helen (McKee Anderson), their daughter Sarah who was bitten on the arm by a zombie and has fallen seriously ill; teenage redneck Tom Bitner (William Butler) and his girlfriend Judy Rose Larson (Katie Finneran). What follows are the attempts by the survivors to defend the house under siege from the undead. The group is left divided over what their next course of action should be. Harry believes everyone should retreat to the cellar and barricade the door to wait for the authorities. Ben thinks the cellar is a "death trap" and that they would be better served fortifying the house, which at least has alternate escape routes, and Barbara suggests that they should all leave the house on foot while they still can after she notices that the zombies are very slow and that they can just "walk right past them". An argument between Ben and Harry leaves the Coopers in the basement tending to their ailing daughter and the remaining members of the group upstairs to continue their work reinforcing the doors and windows; the loud sound of hammers hitting the nails into the wood attracts more zombies to the house.

A plan is ultimately devised to escape using Ben's truck, which is out of fuel. There is a gas pump on the property but it is locked. A search of a corpse on the property produces a set of keys. Judy Rose, Tom, and Ben proceed up the hill toward the gas pump but their plan begins to unravel when Ben falls from the back of the truck and is left to defend himself against the undead. After discovering the key to the gas pump is not among the bunch they brought with them, Tom attempts to shoot the lock off. The falling gasoline is ignited, trailing after them in the truck. The resulting explosion kills both Tom and Judy.

Ben returns to the house to find things beginning to dissolve into chaos. Harry has wrestled Barbara's gun away from her and is now armed. Unbeknownst to the survivors upstairs, the Coopers' daughter Sarah has died from the bite on her arm and has become a zombie; she attacks and bites her distraught mother, who does not defend herself. When Sarah makes her way upstairs she triggers a shootout between her father, who is trying to protect her, and Ben and Barbara, who are trying to protect themselves. Both Ben and Harry are badly wounded. Harry retreats upstairs to the attic, while Ben makes his way to the cellar. Barbara leaves the house, now being overrun by the undead, to attempt to find help.

Barbara eventually joins a posse of locals who are attempting to clear the area of the undead. She returns with them to the farmhouse the next day to find Ben has died of his wounds and reanimated. He is shot in the head by one of the posse members. Harry emerges from the attic alive, Barbara kills him in a fit of rage and turns to leave the house, telling the vigilantes they have "another one for the fire." During the games, the men playfully hang and torture the dead and Barbara says "They're us. We're them and they're us."

Cast
Tony Todd as Ben
Patricia Tallman as Barbara
Tom Towles as Harry Cooper
McKee Anderson as Helen Cooper
Heather Mazur as Sarah Cooper
William Butler as Tom
Katie Finneran as Judy Rose
Bill Moseley as Johnnie
Michael Magnano as Child Zombie in Woods [scene deleted]

Production and release
The film was handled by the same team as the original, with the exception that directing duties were handled by famed special make-up effects artist Tom Savini, who originally signed up with hopes of doing the make-up effects as he was not able to for the original film. Romero served as producer for the remake, and he recruited some of the original camera and sound crew to participate. According to the study of the film in Cinemetrics website, the remake has exactly the same Average Shot Length (5.4 seconds) as that of the original film made in 1968.

In addition to this, two stars of the original film make cameo appearances during the climax. Bill Cardille, plays a TV reporter, much as he did in the 1968 version, and he is seen interviewing Sheriff McClelland, played by the original Johnny, Russell Streiner. Streiner, who also produced the original, acted as executive producer on the remake.

To avoid an NC-17 rating, Savini had to cut several scenes from the film, some of which can be seen on the DVD. Savini sometimes shows the entirety of the cut scenes at conventions. A Blu-ray version was released in a limited edition of 3,000 in October 2012 by Twilight Time.

5 Tips for painitng small spaces

The one topic I've written about on my blog that gets attention from thousands of decor happy readers is decorating small spaces.  I think that is because rooms and homes today are smaller than they once were.  People living in condos or apartments must be conscious of using every trick in the book to enlarge their living spaces. So stay awhile and see how colour can solve some of your small space dilemmas.  Perhaps in these suggestions you will find a treatment for your small space.

Use one colour everywhere

This might seem like an extreme solution but it isn't really.  Using one colour all over a room makes the different planes blend together  to give a more unified look.  You can even use the same colour on the floor and ceiling if you wish.  Since your eye continues to move  freely around the room you have no sense of the boundaries of it.

If I could change one thing about this room above, I would paint the trim a soft pink too to keep the eye moving. Painting  trim white creates vertical and horizontal lines that your eyes automatically go to and follow. You can see the difference in the room below where the trim is painted out.  The room has an unbroken field of colour that is certainly expansive even though a dark colour was used.

More blue, but the trim is painted a coordinating colour that is closer in value to the walls decreasing the emphasis on  the trim which seems to just blend in.

Use cool colours

The rooms above are using the same colour almost everywhere, but they  are also utilizing another colour trick. Cool colours like blues, blue grays etc. make the walls of a room recede thus making the space appear larger than it actually is. Blues are an excellent choice for small bathrooms, laundry rooms, spare bedrooms, etc.  When walls recede you tend to notice the furnishings rather than the  "box" that contains them.

There's nothing like a cool lavender with white and light grays to expand a space.

Use a dark colour on the walls

That's right, a dark colour!  Would you ever think that would work?  It does because  the corners disappear in the shadows and your eye moves around easily. Darker colours are often perceived as  visually deeper. There are  decorators who take the opposite approach to keeping walls light in a small space.  And the final trick with dark colours in small rooms is to paint them in a semi-gloss or gloss to reflect light.  This approach is not for the faint of heart,  but it can be quite stunning.   If you're afraid to go really dark choose a mid value gray or taupe.

Use a colour you see outside

Blues and greens give the impression that the room continues beyond the windows. You can paint the walls an outside colour or use one  in your fabric choices.  I love the freshness of the room below. It certainly is reminiscent of  plants.

blending outside and inside colours

Designer Christina Murphy uses green to great effect  to visually extend this room by connecting it to the view outside the window.  Keeping a simple colour scheme is also visually enlarging.

blending outside and inside in decor

Everything about this room invites the outside in and blends the two together. Lighter floors always enlarge a space.  There are no dark hardwoods in my life, I like light and airy all the way.

Keep walls and furniture a similar colour

When you keep the furniture and walls close to the same colour you are blurring the lines between them. As a result the mass of the furniture is decreased and the overall volume of the room is increased.  If you don't wish to have all the furniture the same colour consider having at least  the bigger items like armoires and chests close to the wall colour so they will begin to blend into the room and widen it out.

I also want the cabinet for the TV to be a lighter colour, but it is undeniably a focal point in the room  and every room needs one. I'd also skip the dark wood rods which your eye travels to automatically because of the contrast, but I also understand why the decorator chose them (all the woods in the room are dark).   Overall I love these two rooms.  They are warm and inviting.

I equally love the cool minimal look  of this room, but it isn't for everyone.

Paint a Focal Wall

I'm not a large fan of painting a focal wall.  I think sometimes it works to great advantage, but most times it is a less than creative solution in a space. This strategy  can work wonders in a small space, Don't be afraid to paint an accent wall a darker receding color thus  making the space look larger.

And there you have it.  The only thing left to do is decide which of these solutions will work in your space.
 Happy painting.

Is the Movie Ghosts of Georgia Based on a True Story?

Synopsis of The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia

The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia is a 2013 psychological horror film that serves as a brother film to The Haunting in Connecticut by Gold Circle Films. The script was written by David Coggeshall and Tom Elkins served as director. It was released in a limited theatrical run, and through video on demand, on February 1, 2013. The story was inspired by the events surrounding the Wyrick house of Ellerslie, Georgia, which were published in the book The Veil: Heidi Wyrick's Story.

Plot
The Wyrick family is delighted to receive a deal on a historic home in rural Georgia where they plan to raise their family free of the complications of city life. As the family settles in, the daughter Heidi (Emily Alyn Lind) starts to have conversations with a man she calls "Mr. Gordy" (Grant James). As the story unfolds, it is revealed that Mr. Gordy is a spirit and one of several that Heidi is interacting with. Her abilities were inherited from her mother's side and, while her aunt accepts the visions, her mother is in complete denial and suppresses her visions with medication. The other spirits that Heidi communicates with are the slaves from the Underground Railroad who were once sheltered in the forest by her house.

After every family member has several scary confrontations with ghosts, the slaves lead Heidi to a hidden underground cellar where she discovers their bodies, which are later given a proper memorial. Unfortunately, her trip to the cellar has allowed an evil spirit, the station master and taxidermist, of that Underground Railroad, to target her for his hobby. Heidi has a protector in Mr. Gordy and heeds his warnings and persuades her family to leave. However, they are too late, and the station master kidnaps her.

Heidi's mother Lisa (Abigail Spencer) then embraces communication with the dead, and with the help of the slaves, finds her daughter and destroys the station master's ghost. Now living in peace, Mr. Gordy helps Heidi ride her bike before he and the slaves depart to the afterlife.
